Description
On May 14, 1804, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, leaders of the Corps of Discovery, eagerly set off from St. Louis on their journey to explore the American wilderness. President Thomas Jefferson had asked Lewis and Clark to chart the Missouri River and to find a water route that might lead to the Pacific Ocean. Throughout their two-year trip into unknown territory, Lewis and Clark recorded their many experiences in their journals. On September 23, 1806, the Corps of Discovery jubilantly returned to St. Louis and became the first expedition to have crossed the great American West.
