11. Soda ash machine

Inside the mill at the Gilman Mine. Chemicals are stored in pallets in the left forefront and a battery operated fork lift is parked in the center background. The soda ash mixing machine
area is at the top of the platform. Soda ash (also called washing soda, sodium carbonate Na2CO3) was one of the chemicals used to clean the ore. The large pipe on the left is for ventilation of the soda ash work area.

The New Jersey Zinc Company owned the Eagle Mine located in Gilman, Colorado. This is an unprepared, unprinted payroll check showing the company having an account with the First National Bank of Eagle County. The bottom of the check with deductions is perforated to be detached for employee records. The Eagle Mine officially closed in the 1980s following a shutdown by the EPA.

Ed and Julia (Mayne) Miller at the New Jersey Zinc picnic, Maloit Park. The fireplace cooked many a meal during the years the mine at Gilman was in operation. Ed was chef at the staff house in Gilman until his retirement in 1965.
