A closer look at the barn at H. K. Brooks' Castle Peak Ranch. The cattle are eating at feeders at mid-field.
Hollis "Holly" Kelloway Brooks came to Eagle County from Minnesota, settling first in McCoy and then operating a general store in Edwards. From 1926 to 1929, he was the County treasurer. In 1931 and through the 1940s, he owned and operated the Castle Peak ranch (Bar X) in Eagle.

Lee Johnson and Ed, his brother. The Johnson Brothers began buying registered Herefords in 1906 and handled range cattle, as well. They increased their land holdings, including the Sherman Brothers ranch east of Eagle in 1919, to become the largest owners of irrigated farm land in the county.
Ed Johnson ran the ranch and Lee Johnson had the transport company out of Longmont.

"Charley McCoy's Upper Place in 1930.The original log house was destroyed by fire in 1927 or 1928 and the frame house was built shortly afterwards. This picture shows some of Charley McCoy's top grade of cattle. Photo postcard looking northeast of James E. Ullman's Castle Peak Ranch in Eagle. Ullman bought the ranch from John Carey in September 1919 for $28,000. It included ninety acres of farming land in the home place and included summer range on Castle. [EVE Sept. 19, 1919 p.1]
The ranch was purchased by Holly Brooks in 1931.

The shed on the Glen Schmidt Ranch: "Cattle shelter and/or machinery storage shed, 112' x 25' building, 2,88 sq. ft., 12'6" high walls, pole supports, siding walls, open to south, dirt floor, corrugated iron roofing south exposure, wood shingle north exposure, wood sheathing deck on 2" x 6" trusses, 24" o.c., no utilities...We have estimated the age of this structure at about 50 to 60 years. This is the original John Cowden family homestead cabin, which was moved about a half a mile from it's original site on Bellyache. Jack Oleson reconstructed the cabin on the Diamond S ranch.
A tour of the ranch was conducted by the Eagle County Historical Society and the Diamond S Ranch on October 5, 2013.
