"The trail drive to Wolcott, Colorado (the nearest shipping point from Burns, Colorado) was always an exciting time, eating and sleeping on the trail. But it also meant lots of hard work and long hours. Frank Gates (Dad) told his son George Albert "Bud" Gates that he was 12 years old before he was allowed to go on the trail drive. Stacking hay on the Chester Mayer Ranch (Eagle, Colorado), not the Eagle Ranch subdivision on Brush Creek. The hay was lifted to the top of the stack by a "Mormon Derrick," a weight and pulley arrangement using a crane. The derrick is in the center of the photo with horse teams and rakes "pushing" hay to the loading area.

Mowing alfalfa using horse teams on the Mayer Ranch at the south end of the town of Eagle. (This ranch property is developed and is called the "Bull Pasture.") There are three teams, each pulling a cutter on which sits a team driver. The first team is driven by Ralph Robertson, Allan Hibbs is next driving the mules, and Frank Hulett is on the back team

Potato harvest on Bobson Ranch near Gypsum. The unearthed potatoes are put on the horse-drawn sorter by hand. Two men are filling the sack from the sorter. Filled sacks are left upright in the rows to be loaded onto carts.

"Harvesting a good crop of oats on the Arthur Horn ranch in 1916. Along with the assurance of an ample supply of irrigation water out of Rock Creek, this soil is very productive.
